CRPS Q & A

What is complex regional pain syndrome?

CRPS is a chronic pain condition that typically affects a limb, often after an injury or trauma.

While the exact cause of CRPS is not fully understood, it is believed to involve abnormal responses of the peripheral and central nervous systems.

CRPS type 1 causes chronic pain and motor dysfunction without causing nerve damage to the affected limb itself. CRPS type 2 presents the same symptoms as type 1, but the limb also has nerve damage.

What are the symptoms of CRPS?

Complex regional pain syndrome symptoms can vary from person to person, but commonly include the following:

Persistant pain

Individuals with CRPS experience continuous, intense pain that may be disproportionate to the initial injury.

Skin changes

The affected area may undergo changes in color, temperature, and texture, such as becoming sweaty or shiny.

Swelling and stiffness

Swelling and stiffness in the affected limb can limit mobility and functionality.

Motor disfunction

CRPS may lead to difficulty moving the affected limb and may result in muscle atrophy.

If CRPS goes untreated, it can cause tissue deterioration or muscles that tighten and are unable to move. Dr. Ghorieshi provides prompt and effective CRPS care at Palo Alto Mind Body.
